Mirine at Seven Mile Bridge
The longest segmental bridge in the world, Seven Mile Bridge begins at Marathon and is the gateway to the Lower Keys. Opened in 1982, it replaced the Old Seven Mile Bridge which had been built on parts of railroad bridges. Yes, there was a railroad which ran to Key West from 1912 until a major hurricane destroyed it in 1935. Located in the middle of the chain, Marathon is known as the Heart of the Keys. Each April, Marathon hosts the annual Seven Mile Bridge Run, with 1500 running aficionados competing in a foot race over the azure waters of the Atlantic Ocean and Gulf of Mexico.
